A smile
The woman smiled at a stranger with sorrowful face.
The smile seemed to make him feel better.
He remembered past kindnesses of a friend
Helped him to overcome obstacles
And he decided to write him a thank-you letter.
The friend was so pleased with the sincere thank-you
That he left a large tip on the table after lunch at a restaurant.
The waitress, surprised by the big size of the tip,
So she bet the whole sum on a hunch for a fortune.
The next day she got the news of her winning,
And gave part of it straight to a wandering man.
The man on the street was grateful;
For two days he’d had nothing to eat.
After finishing his lavish dinner with bread and butter and milk,
He left for his small dingy house.
Where the other poor lived together.
