62. Why do we need vitamin C?
The food we eat provides our body with essential substances like
proteins, fats, carbonhydrates, water and mineral substances. Apart
from these, our body also requires other important substances
known as vitamins.
Vitamin C, one of the vitamins, is found in citrus fruits and fresh
vegetables. When there is a deficiency of vitamins in our body,
diseases occur. Because of the Lack of vitamin C in the body, the
blood vessels become fragile and bleed easily. The skin develops
black and blue marks. The gums start bleeding. The hormones and
enzynmes in our body do not function properly and the body lowers
the resistance to infection by bacteria. The disease caused by the
deficiency of vitamin C is termed as scurvy.
